Overview

DMS604 is a compact industrial direct Time-of-Flight sensor for long-range point measurement. Its integrated dToF SoC, SPAD receiver, 905 nm VCSEL emitter, optics and onboard processing deliver calculated distance data through a UART interface at up to 50 frames per second.

The published distance range reaches 58 m indoors and 35 m outdoors under 100 klux ambient light. Both figures are specified with targets from 18% to 88% reflectivity. The narrow ≤1.3° field of view is suited to directional ranging where the system needs to isolate a compact measurement area.

A single 5 V supply and four-pin connection simplify host integration. The 40 × 10 × 7.7 mm module is specified for operation from -20°C to 85°C. Final range and accuracy still depend on target reflectivity, ambient light, mechanical alignment, cover-window design and the complete system configuration.

Engineering Advantages

Long-range outdoor measurement

DMS604 is specified for up to 35 m ranging outdoors at 100 klux while maintaining a 50 fps output rate, using targets with 18-88% reflectivity.

Integrated histogram processing

The proprietary dToF SoC combines SPAD detection, TDC, DSP and histogram processing with a super-resolution algorithm. The performance table publishes accuracy as <±30 mm below 3 m and <±1% at 3 m or greater.

Simple MCU connection

The module requires 5 V, ground, UART_TX and UART_RX. An external MCU or SoC can start or stop streaming and read the calculated distance result through the documented UART command format.

Applications

The DMS604 specification identifies the following application categories. Confirm target, optical, environmental and safety performance in the final assembly.

Industrial Distance Measurement

  • Use the 50 fps calculated-distance stream for continuous point ranging and position feedback.
  • The ≤1.3° FoV supports directional measurement; validate the target size and alignment across the required distance.
  • For bright installations, evaluate against the specified 35 m outdoor condition at 100 klux and 18-88% target reflectivity.

UAV Altitude Hold and Obstacle Avoidance

  • UAV altitude hold and obstacle avoidance are listed applications in the product specification.
  • The 40 × 10 × 7.7 mm module combines optics, ranging processing and UART output in one assembly.
  • Flight use requires system-level validation across surface reflectivity, sunlight, attitude, vibration, weather protection and control-loop timing.

UART Stream Control

The UART interface provides calculated distance data and can expose main-peak amplitude, signal-to-noise ratio and related ranging information. Version 1.0 documents CRC-16/MODBUS framing and the following command examples.

Stop StreamA5 12 20 02 00 00 00 07 6D
Confirm the released UART protocol with DOMI before firmware freeze. Version 1.0 contains inconsistent byte-count and response-field descriptions in its worked examples.

905 nm Cover-Window Requirements

  • Transmittance: more than 95% at 905 nm.
  • Haze: less than 5%.
  • Geometry: upper and lower surfaces must be smooth and parallel; the window must not be bent or installed at an angle.
  • Thickness: a thin cover is recommended, preferably below 0.8 mm.
  • Placement: fit the cover closely against the module front surface to limit optical crosstalk between transmitter and receiver.

Safety and Compliance

Class 1 Laser Design

The DMS604 laser output is designed to remain within Class 1 limits under reasonably foreseeable conditions, including a compliant single-fault condition, in accordance with IEC 60825-1:2014. This statement applies only when the recommended configuration and specified operating conditions are followed.

  • Do not increase the laser output power.
  • Do not use an optical device to focus the laser beam.
  • Controls or procedures outside the specification can create hazardous radiation exposure.

RoHS Requirements

The specification states that DMS604 is manufactured with reference to the EU restriction on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and complies with RoHS requirements.

FAQs

Does the DMS604 measure up to 35 m outdoors at 100 klux?

Yes. The DMS604 performance table specifies a typical outdoor distance range of 35 m under 100 klux ambient light with targets from 18% to 88% reflectivity, while operating at a 50 fps frame rate.

Does the DMS604 provide up to 58 m indoor ranging?

Yes. The published typical indoor range is 58 m for targets with 18-88% reflectivity. Final range depends on target, optical, ambient-light and system conditions.

Does the DMS604 output distance data at 50 fps through UART?

Yes. DMS604 uses a UART interface and is specified for a 50 fps frame rate. The interface supports calculated distance output and can provide main-peak amplitude, signal-to-noise ratio and related information.

Does the DMS604 specify centimeter-level ranging accuracy?

Yes. The performance table publishes accuracy as less than ±30 mm below 3 m and less than ±1% at distances of 3 m or greater. Version 1.0 uses a different 2.5 m boundary in its feature summary, so DOMI confirmation is recommended before setting acceptance limits.

Is the DMS604 suitable for UAV altitude hold and obstacle avoidance?

Yes. UAV altitude hold and obstacle avoidance are listed applications in the specification. Flight designs must validate surface reflectivity, sunlight, attitude, vibration, environmental protection and control-loop response at system level.

Can the DMS604 operate from -20°C to 85°C?

Yes. The specified operating-temperature range is -20°C to 85°C. The published storage-temperature range is -30°C to 70°C.

Can the DMS604 operate behind a protective optical window?

Yes. Use a smooth, parallel cover with more than 95% transmittance at 905 nm and less than 5% haze. A thickness below 0.8 mm is preferred, and the cover must sit close to the module without bending or tilt to limit optical crosstalk.

Is the DMS604 designed as an IEC 60825-1 Class 1 laser product?

Yes. The laser output is designed to remain within Class 1 limits in accordance with IEC 60825-1:2014 when the recommended configuration and specified operating conditions are followed. Do not increase output power or use optics to focus the beam.
